Our bakery

The Angel’s Share Bakery was opened by Alex Franks to supply our delicatessen in Grange Road, Darlington. This was a direct response to customer requests for ‘proper artisan bread’.

Although most of our products from salads, quiches and savouries to patisseries were made on site, it was clear that, to make our own breads, the Victorian premises in Darlington were not big enough.

Being from Richmond with a soft spot for the old Station building, we jumped at the chance to take on one of the newly installed producer units in 2008 and The Angel’s Share Bakery was born.

The deli was sold in Darlington in 2012 to fully concentrate on developing the Bakery in Richmond. We expanded into the adjoining unit in the Station to incorporate a Traiteur – specialising in take-home authentic Mediterranean food.

Our bakers

The main bakers at The Angel’s Share are owner Alex Franks, Di Dinsdale and Gill Ives, Alex’s mother.

“You have to have an attention to detail. Alex and Di, for example are far, far better than they think that they are. They are very special because they are both female bread makers in a commercial environment, and that is very unusual, because the job is intensely physical and demanding.”
